Hey guys, Need some advice... Tried to help a neighbor kid and paid him to wash up the boat this spring. Unfortunately I guess I wasn't "clear" enough on my instructions. He took a scotch brite pad and scrubbed the hull, cutting into the gel coat. The luster is blotchy and I'm worried we've done some damage. Is there a product you guys are aware of that I could apply to the hull to restore the situation or am I looking at a new paint job?
Also, going out perching tomorrow and will post how I do.

3M makes a really good product for restoring shin to the gel coat, West Marine has it. Can't remember the exact name. Restore? Anyway mine was really chalked bought a GOOD buffer and some GOOD pads and lots of elbow--- looks like new than some good wax. Not sure how it does on scratches. I'd go to west marine and see, they have about anything you need, but it's lots of rubbing.

You need a good buffer like auto body guys use that has variable speed and can turn some good revs. Go to a auto paint supplier and get the 3m heavy wool pads (2), not the lite ones. Also while your there buy a pad cleaner, it fluffs and cleans the pad but doesn't ruin it like a screwdriver will. Get some 3m super duty rubbing compound and some finishing compound. Use a different pad for each. Test an area and use a liberal amount of compound at high speed, careful around ridges and corners. If this doesn't take them out totally then carefully wet sand first with 600 or higher and then rub it with both compounds. Wax it last with the buffer and some collinite fleetwax. This should get them out

What Greenhead said, but go easy with the rubbing compound it doesn't take much or you will end up with a worse problem. Maybe better off with a lighter grade of rubbing compound to start, you can always go heaver if need be.
