Hey Coach, I suggest, to be functional for the remainder of this season,

2@ 6color, and 2@ 8 color. .... It really depends on how many rods you typically run. You really don't need, IMO, to have a 5,6,7, etc. I just fished with 5's and 7's. The 7's started to fire regularly so I let out 50 - 75 ft. of braid backing on each of the 5 color. I calculate this got me an additional 8 - 12 ft on the 5 color, to equal the 7's. afterwards, the 5's fired too. We'll have to try to get out together so I can show you. CHEERS

Coach the 47 will hold up to 7 colors comfortably you can squeeze 10 colors on it but with limited backer. I do not use braid for backer I use 20lb mono (usually Berkley big game) I have my own theory on mono for backer acting like a rubber band and adding a little stretch giving the lead core more action. I'm well over 300 walleyes since the end of the Southtowns tourney so I feel the results are somewhat proven....lol In my opinion I would go with a 3, 5, 5, & a 7 color if your just fishing from Sturgeon pt. to Buffalo. BUT I would also get 2 Okuma 45 series reel and put 2 10 color rods together if your venturing west towards the Catt or further west. If you want a hand getting them setup get a hold of me I can get you all set up I just got 30 spools of lead core in and we can get them all spooled up and ready to go. My number is 716 796 5372 Thanks, Jim

Danley4 the reason your 5 colors started to fire was not the result of them diving deeper because the deepest a 5 color can dive without any weight is 30 ft at 1.5-2.0 mph, it is because the additional backer gave the lead core the proper action it needed. When using Braid for backer you will always have to let out more backer to achieve the proper action. Im not saying using braid is wrong because it works fine, but you almost always have to let out 30% or so more backer to accomplish what mono will do with less backer out. The fish are stacked from 10 ft down to almost the bottom with the thermocline not being set up yet due to all this wind we have been having. As Capt. Joe said even our 2 colors have been working well and they are only diving 10-12 feet down max. I would say about 75% of our fish are being caught in the top 25 feet of the water column our best setups have been 3 & 4 color with harnesses. Just my 2 cents on your post.

    Dan/Jim,
Ended up filling 2 with five colors and 2 with seven colors. Used the Suffix 18#. Used braid as a backer and floro carbon as a leader. Added a swivel between the leader and lead core. Jim - Your theory about braid vs mono as a backer is an interesting one. So thanks for sharing your thoughts and now it is up to me to learn to use this system of trolling. I do fish west in Dunkirk/Barcelona as the summer goes on. Walker Divers and Renoskys/worm harnesses have served me well down there. I will have to get a ten color set up and try that as well. Thanks again.

    Hey Jim and Coach.

Don't you love fishermen.????? we all have our ideas and practices that we're confident in. Jim, WOW you're having a great season and thanks for your insight(s) into your program. Here's my thoughts on our program, just sharing.....
I use power Pro 30# as backer. My view is..... $6/10 in leadcore, $40 board, $7 Renowsky..... I want it back every time.
Secondly, I have one of those fish hawk TD depth and temp gauge thingies.... What I have found and confirmed by running toward shore, is that at 1.7 MPH, our "Old" leadcore runs at 7ft. per color with no backer out. Then we ran test, by letting out 50ft. of braid backer, up the same hill, and averaged 8/9ft per color. Our thought is that the higher resistance (diameter) of leadcore causes "planing" when run top to depth, like a banana. Since Braid is much less diameter, it doesn't "banana" like leadcore therefore the leadcore, lays flatter in the water since there is less drag and "planing". Seems like simple physics. When in doubt go shallower..... is our motto. If you don't see them on your graph, it "Might" be because your cone is only about 4-6 ft around at 15 ft.on most units. Jim is right... we consider what we're seeing and move up if they aren't set up at 30,40 ,50 etc. Also, actively feeding fish tend to move higher in the water.... they're like cows.... they go were the food is. Cheers.
