Just got #4. Copper seems to be working.
Ended up with 5. Had 6 poles out, 4 came off the same rod. Hammered copper was the trick. All 5 came off the copper.
Fished out of the Catt today till noon. Lost one on the rigger on a smaller UV harness. Couldn't find them after the week of wind, if it wasn't for the perch action, we wouldn't of had any at all. We tried straight out towards the line then in closer and west 78 - 84 fow.
That was the big ? at Dunkirk. Everyone on the radio was asking that quetion. We did see some on the screen but they were not hitting like the week before. I believe that the wids had something to do with that. I did hear several boats get 3 or 4 but no large numbers.
Now is it normal for the bite in late summer to fall right off? As fallnears and progresses are the erie eyes like other lake eyes and the bite will get better as water temps cool? I k ow other lakes fall can be the best time. How late into the fall will you fish erie? I plan on getting out well into october myself.
I think the week of wind jacked things up but the summer bite should be good once things stabilize again. I've talked to a few guys that stick it out between windy days in the fall and they say the bite is really good. You dont hear about it because most guys transition into bow season or steelies.
Planning on heading out thursday afternoon or friday morning, most likely out of Dunkirk.
Went out at dunkirk this morning - only caught 1 'eye. We were in 80-90 FOW using mostly worm harnesses, 1 stick bait, and I believe it was an orange spoon that caught the walleye.
Over the radio I heard out towards evangola they were marking fish and big bait clouds.
Only had a couple hours to get out this morning so figured I'd work on the resident walleyes of meyer's reef. Got set up and made one pass along the western edge along the reef. Picked up one eye on a 30 jet and a few bass right away. Couldn't turn around and stay on my course, was jammed in by the bass tournament anglers. So ...... I joined em for the remainder of the morning. Hoping to make it west soon, just didn't have the time for the long trip from Buffalo today.
I went out early this morning. Sorry to say NO Walleye! Only one perch. Wish I knew about the 3 pole rule. Maybe the fish saw only 2 in the boat and only 4 poles. They said what dummies they don't know about the new rule we won't bite their hooks. We trolled and trolled and trolled. We were west of S. P. 9 miles. And the trolled east.
3 rods per man my boat will look like a peacock out there now I think for charters and anyone trolling our odds just got better. Its about time our state did something right. It still amazes me the bs even a simple amendment to a law has to go thru. Next week out of the oak for me good luck on erie if things brighten up on the smaller pond I just may head west. Tight lines all
I know I can sucsessfully run 12 rods off my boat ,we did it during the southtowns tourny. Without any tangles I might add!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi guys, I was out a bunch last week and only picked up two west of SP. Do you think the fish are further down the lake like maybe out of barcelona? Just want to see your opinions on where you think the fish are headed... Thanks
hey guys, I was out a bunch last week and only got two eyes and a bunch of pig sheep head. Do you think the fish are headin more west like out a barcelona? Just wanted to get your opinions on where the fish might be... Thanks
The wife (Peppermint) and I (Salt) were out on Friday (August 19) and put three in the box, the largest being 7.5 pounds. We were just north of the line, south of Abino to south of Port Colborne in 62-72 feet of water. Couple of nice perch, too, but a slow day. We were marking lots of fish from 20 to 60 feet down but they weren't actively feeding. Took two on dipsey 20's/green worm harnesses, 180 feet back and one on the downrigger / purple & black harness at a depth of 40 feet. Trolling at 1.5 mph. We're waiting for the lake to stop boiling to get out again, looking like Friday. We're going to move southwest into 80+ feet of water.
with the new NYS 3-rod law...
i can now (with a two person crew) fish 12 baits at a time for suspended schooling erie eyes, also btw w/o tangling... ;)
awesome deep open water program, and not possible without the law change...
new york assembly/governor finally did something right for those that pay more than their fair share of the bills...
better late than never, thanks!!!
First boat out of the Catt on friday, ran out to the line and trolled west. Got 1 on dipsy 160ft back #3 setting. Caught 2 more around 11:30 on 40 jet 120ft back off of board. All 3 fish came on worm harness.
Who's going out tomorrow? I plan on going out of Sturgeon Point and heading north towards the line. Good luck to all.
Peppermint and I will be out just after dawn. We'll be heading southwest into 80 feet of water. Listen for our chatter on 68. Best of luck to all.
Out here now. Lake is flat. NO bites. Not much on the screen. Just now and then.
I havent been hearing much of anything good lately...hopefully that will change. My job has been busy so Im forced to work this weekend...Im a bit miserable right now..there is basically no wind and the lake was a mirror this morning. On top of that... I just wired in my new downriggers in and have been bracing at the bit to get out...this just completly sucks and there is nothing I can do about it. I hope the guys that can get out this weekend generate some solid reports. Hopefully the calm weather will continue into next week and Ill be able to get out then. Good luck to all.
Went out of Sturgeon yesterday morning. I checked a bunch of spots west, all the way to Dunkirk. When I marked anything, it was on the bottom. I dropped rigs down there and all I came up with was silver bass and sheephead. Threw everything at em from sticks to harnesses. Seemed to only be a handful of boats out there all spread out. Good Luck to guys going this weekend.
Captainjoe reporting in - Sorry to say NO Walleye today. Only one channel cat. A few other hits but not many. Went north out of Sturgeon Pt. trolled east to towards the condos. Didn't see much on the screen. Circled around and went west. I saw more fish when I hit 63 ft. Some on the bottom and some suspended. Word on the radio was SLOW. I used two dipseys on the port side and one jet of the back. I don't think it would help if I used four poles. Good luck everyone.
Went out ex Pt. Colborne yesterday due south into 72 feet of water, marked very few. Took only one small walleye on the down rigger and a few perch on the dipseys. Very slow. Heard a lot of chatter mid afternoon on 68 between boats around 5 miles SE of Abino on the CDN side of the" line in 62 feet of water having good success on riggers, limiting out. Went there, marked lots of fish but the bite was off. Looks like they're still out there and not too deep.
Out of Dunkirk right now. 4 in the box. N E 8 miles out. The screen is loaded. 1 off downrigger 2 off jets with weights 1 off small deep diver. All worm harnesses.
Went out of Dunkirk yesterday - midday, headed west near Brocton Shoal off the blue water tower. Put 4 eyes in the box, lost one behind the boat, all over 6lbs. Landed a 21" laker on a peanut behind cowbells and lost something nice on a spoon off the bottom. All eyes were suspended 50-60 down in 85-105 fow. 20 jets w 4oz and 10 color lead worked along with dipsys. Ran 2 riggers strictly for lakers. Flat lake, only boat out there most of the day, unreal. First time fishing that area so I guess we got lucky.
6 in the box
Great capt I am getting out tomorrow trying to decide whether to head west or north.
I caught a few outside of the North Gap last night, including a 7 pounder. It sounds like the action is picking up again...
Hey capt where did you launch out of today?
We ended up with 11. Best day on the lake this year. I went in my neighbors boat. He has a slip at Dunkirk. We went N E 8 mi and trolled north to the line. All but one came off big boards with jets and deep divers and worm harnesses. No special colors today. They all seemed to work. The screen was the best that we seen. They were biting very ligh. Check your lines often they might be hanging on.
Anybody been fishing?
Sorry to say I haven't. I worked all last week and the weekend. Guess what - I was off yesterday, 35 knot winds & 6 ft waves. The rest of my crew went out Sunday out of Dunkirk. They caught 1 (one). This weekend looks good weather wise. Hope to get out at least once. Do you think they will be going back to Myers Reef? Or is the water still too warm?
Went out today. Sorry to say not even a hit. I trolled around Myers reef. There was some marks on the graph, alot of bait fish with marks around them but NO takers. ??? Some of the purch guys did great today. That was the talk on the radio.
went out sbh, wasn't lucky by roundhouse, tried reef no luck, then went to shoal and got two drifting with harnesses and bouncers...just off the ledge 30-40fow
Where is everybody? I went out today. Out of Sturgeon Pt. 5-7 miles N W. Anchored and fished for PURCH. Yes sorry to admit it! PURCH. Three of us. ended up with 28. Nothing to screem about - but at least we got lines in the water, some sun, a little wind (not much) and a few fish. Some were small, very small and some were good size. I heard some were getting many more last weekend. We picked up bait at Daves, and the bait was SMALL and not cheap. Tomorrow is suspose to be great again weather wise and I may go tomorrow but closer to the point. I want to get back and watch The Bill's game. Tight lines everyone.
I haven't heard anything good going on from the people I know who have gone out so hoping it changes up before its to late. Thee paper says getting eyes at upper river but never fished it so no clue where yo start. I have never boat fished erie perch sure its productive and well worth it. Next weekend maybe it will change up and I will run out I could always fish the steel sure they will stack up and be catchable at the mouths if we get some more rain.
Got up today. Checked the weather. I the sun was out. Not much wind. I had to go out. Went out of the point N W only about a mile or so for 1 1/2 hours. Only caught one Purch. I used worms in 52 FOW. Many boats were pulling up anchor and looking. I heard someone had 34 Purch. What a great day for this time of year. I went to a benefit and watched the BILLS WIN. Tight lines everyone.
Joe ill be out tomorrow for perch ill let you know how we do.
We Perch fished 6 miles west of sturgeon around the 41/10 line 70 fow and boxed out with a 4 man limit(200). We fished from 7:00 am till 3:00 pm awesome fall day of fishing! Oh ya we got our minnows in the river at the foot of ferry they're still a little small but worked just the same.
Good job. Sounds like you had a great day. This may have been the best day to go out for a while. Thursday / Friday they are calling for 12 footers. Sunday may be a go if the wind settles.
