Yeah I hear you on that one ! :) Honestly I'd rather get out and do more walleye fishing, this year I want to launch out of dunkirk just to try that area out. With 2 younger kids at home though I would rather keep them interested in fishing so perch and bass is what we usually go after, and short trips as well. They won't be young forever though!
Rick, forget the scaleing part, filet them, skin them ,then trim off all the dark colored meat & the blood line. Then you got some good eating ! For the perch find the crowd, drop anchor, use a crappie rig spreader with minnows & catch perch, then perpare them the same as above, more good eats!!
going out tomorrow not sure where to go sturgeon or the catt with the southtowns tourney going on im assuming folks will be tight lipped just want to go out and catch a few walleye not compete.any help with depths color etc would be greatly appreciated....thanks guys good luck
I may go out tomarrow also. From what I am hearing & seeing on this site it looks as if the farther west you go the better the fishing. I saw center rd. & purina towers on here. jmo. I haven't been out for awhile. Good Luck!
Everyone's been deeper 60-70 ft. I read on the dec site that dull colors were out fishing bright colors. On the other hand my buddy went out saturday evening after the rain. And kept trolling through the center gap at the breakwall and caught 6 eyes. And he's not a huge walleye fisherman. And the sob through them all back cause he didn't feel like cleaning them. Told him all he had to do was drop them off at my house. I'm contemplating going to Dunkirk this weekend. But we'll see
Please answer question...
i love bass fishing, but love eating walleye. if i wanted to enjoy both in an outting is it better to fish for walleye early then go bass fishing or bass fish first and walleye later? i just want to maximize my walleye fishing.
please advise
thanks
wishin fishin asksThe answer is that whenever the lake allows you to go out, go for the walleye, b/c they are always (almost always) in deeper water than bass. When the lake kicks up, come in closer to shore and fish for bass. This is a wierd year with the hot March, it seems like the fishing is different than the usual years where the eyes are shallow in May/June and go deep in later summer. This year who knows ?Quote:

Picked up 5 walleyeto today. One weigher 9.30 lbs. Same area as yesterday.
captjoe :I have not seen you post since 6/9, so where was yesterday ?Quote:
Same area as yesterday
Good job joe glad you got a decent weigher hope you get bigger one to.ill ne out sat kinda close to your area. Hope i find a few bigger ones myself.
Does anyone have any new info on the walleye movement? Depth, colors, lures? Would like to get out this weekend and would like to try and redeem ourselves for last Sunday's wreck of an outing. Lakers, steelies would be good too but eyes are best.
We got 8 today, with 5 being weighers. 1 just under 8lbs the rest between 8&9lbs. We had 39lbs total in the 5 weighers. It was a great day of fishing.
Nice Jim! Sounds like you found them.
walleyerick - off Purina 65 to 100 ft of water. Sometimes the fishfinder lights up and we don't catch anything. Sometimes ( most of the time ) it's blank and we get fish. ????
Bailey - I think thr BIG ONE is waiting for you on Sat. Good luck.
I hope so joe right now shin deep in mud and the good liquid manure setting footings for $hi+ pit on farm i am ready to fish in morning. Dont forget to tell jim happy birthday ha ha.
Jim - HAPPY BIRTHDAY1
OK, I went out today from SBH and ran down to 18 mi creek near Meyers Reef. I trolled from 30 to 48 fow and caught 2 eyes, 23" and 20", no trophies but good eaters. I threw back a 17" which I caught on the way back toward the Intl Mkr Buoy.
But (ta da !, here's the big news), yesterday the guy at the bait shop at the SBH said someone came in with a 34" walleye that he caught off Meyers Reef in 30 fow. He did not have a scale so we do not know what it weighed. I am guessing 13-14#. Today I was talking to the guys from the Southtown Walleye Assn and he said they hit a school (with double headers) off the 1st windmill at 36 fow.
The lake was very nice today with no waves. Go get em !
happy b-day jim!!!!
I would like to thank everyone for the wealth of information on this board! I'm getting back into fishing after a 20 year hiatus, now that my son is old enough to fish. I've gone out a couple of times around the windmills, using a worm harness and starting my drift around 30 fow. Only caught sheepshead so far, but wondering if I need to fish deeper?
Walleyrick mentioned the first windmill, if that the northernmost or southernmost?
It sounds like most of the members troll for walleye, can drifting be effective or should I look into getting a trolling motor?
Hopefully I'm not posting this in the wrong thread.
Thanks,
Joe
3 fish today ... just shy of being weighers...
N to NW of Seneca 51 fow and 40 ft down
blk/pink harnesses, 1.7mph down speed
riggers (40' off ball) and medium blk dispys down 40ft off big boards
saw fish feeding off bugs on surface, but couldn't get them to go.
out again tomorrow...
Happy b-day Jim (whom ever you are)!!:)
Thanks guys it was a good birthday
committed and spent the morning working outer Meyers - should have stayed in bed - one dink and one perch
did find a 7 degree down-temp break for first time this year, and lots of bait
moral of the story "head west young man, head west...."
trolled seneca meyers and windmills wasted 6 hrs got one perch at least i got a tan happy fathers day to all milt
Trolled from first windmill to buoy on Seneca then through outer Meyers and past 18 mile. Got 2 slob bass 6-7 lbs each. One I even saw on the sonar come up from 44 ft to 30 ft and hit the stickbait on the downrigger. Went back to Seneca and jigged a little. Got nothin. Then trolled through the mid gap and along the outer north wall. Got one jigging at the end of the wall almost in the channel. One halfway between donleys and the round house and one more along the north wall. Lost a few too. But they were all small 15 inches or so. Everyone else trolling all said the same thing, all small fish. Spent 10 hrs on the water and came home with nothing. Shoulda just went out of the Catt. I haven't caught small fish like that in years. Thought I was in Chautauqua for a minute. Lol.
I believe it was very slow all over the lake for most. Went out yesterday. Out of Dunkirk - no walleye. One sheephead & 1I silver bass. But boy were the flies & bugs were biting. And some were small bugs. They were in your eyes, ears, nose & mouth. You get the picture. HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL.
Fished out in front of purina towers & east, marked very few, nothing all day until we were picking up & got a 7#der in 52fow. just washed worms & lures the rest of the day! Happy dads day!
Hey at least you guys are out there, my outdrive is sitting in my garage right now about to be broken down to replace water pump etc. It's been a weird year for walleye fishing not many people are catching them it seems from the people I see.
Wnyguy, shouldn't really have to pull outdrive off to replace just the waterpump/impeller, just remove lower part of it. That is at least on a merc.or yamaha I know.
Fished along side fishkiller off the cat in front silver creek i went 3 for six dropped 2 at the net and 1 about 25 ft out on dipsy when it came off . dipsys 56 to 70 out on 3 setting and rigger at 50 ft leadcore 7 colors . All on meat custom blades with reds chartruse black white and blues mixed in them. Thanks for info jim.
Gonna have to do a captainjoe fishkiller and bailey trip out. Be fun to butt heads with all our ideas combined lol.
Went out yesterday around 4pm off Myers Reef 38-45fow picked up 6 Wally's. Got them on 6 colors of lead with black and purple harnesses and purple reef runners of boards. Trolling speed 1.7-2.0mph. Fish were 16-23". I was the only boat out there. Perfect night 6 silver bass and a 4lb smallie. Was off the lake before sunset.
I tried to get out today. I for up late 6:30am. Made breakfast &lunch lunch. Drove to Sturgeon Pt. I saw that there was a strong south wind but I thought about staying close to the shore. I got to the marina and saw a few trucks with trailers in the parking lot. I said i'll go for it. Hooked up the trailer, took off the cover, loaded the boat, etc. Drove to the guard house and talked with the attendants. They said it'd rough out there etc. I saw fishkiller in his boat saying " don't bother going out, it's not worth it". That changed my mind. I then decided to park the boat. I changed ideas with fishkiller & his crew, sales people from Olson's, fisherman from Barcelona, Fishinon 51, Ray from Restless, Hugger. It turned out to be an interesting day talking strategies, mechanical issues etc. Alot of B S going on. It was an interesting day without being in the water. HAY MILT --- we did win Fri. Was used un a relief roll. Came in in the 7 th. Threw 2 pitches got 2 outs - game over.
captjoe sounds like you had a good day on sunday good job on the save and the win fri night
milt
fishon51 and gutpile you seemed to do well off Meyers Reef. That's where I caught my 20 & 23" last Weds in 48 fow. Did you go out of Sturg or SBH ? I think it's a shorter run from SP. Way to go.
Anyone know a good youtube video or website for fileting walleye ? I used to be able to do it blindfolded many years ago, but I have forgot how.
Lineman you are right however I wanted to pull the drive because just replacing my impeller/pump case is a best case scenario. I also wanted to check things over in case anything else was bad (ie back flush all seawater passages), and I'm overdue for engine alignment check so it was a good excuse. I have a merc 170 with an alpha drive, I'm a member of the "470" club...
