Out of Vermilion - Sat 8/27
Left Vermilion dock at 7:00am and tossed a coin whether to head for the Lorain Dumping Ground or out to the Weather Buoy. The shorter drive won and we headed East.
Found fish on the South end of the dump and set lines running inline boards with 3oz inlines pulling harness's.
After an hour without a single bite pulled the lines and headed to East of the top of the dump.
Found fish in 50fow, set up running 2oz weights on one side and Tru-Trip 40's on the other side.
Fish were around 40ft down so we trolled West and across the top end of the dump.
marked fish all the time and no bites.
Switched the harnesses on one side to #7 Flicker Minnows 100 and 80 back.
Have first proper good pull back for last 3 weeks on the 80 back line and it came to the surface but we lost it halfway to the boat.
Then the other Flicker Minnow fired and a really good fish, again came to the surface but lost it within a few seconds.
Changed all 4 lines to Flicker Minnows and managed to pull 3 fish about 16"
No white bass or sheephead.
BTW I don't like the really small trebles on the #7 Flicker Minnows.
Should have made the longer run to the buoy where I believe they did much better.
Will be back at them next weekend.

Thanks for the info Roy. Sucks when you have to double guess your decisions out there. I didn't get a chance to make it out this past weekend, but will be out most of next weekend. Will let you know if we get on some.
I agree, once the lips rip a little on the walleye, those #7's don't have enough length to keep the fish on. Any slack or pop of the line at all - and that fish is gone. I have switched out quite a few trebles on lures in the past year due to lost fish. It does help significantly - although the extra weight of the bigger trebles changes the action and diving of the lure.
Good luck and thanks as always for the updates.

Thanks for the post Ray. Went out of Vermilion (first time this year, been around the island mostly) Fri. around 5 pm and I used a map you posted (I believe) some time ago and headed out to 41 31, 82 21 on south edge of sand bar and moved east with Bandits on one side and harness with 1 oz. inline on the other. No matter what we tried with bandits no luck but the harness at 75' back at 2 - 2.3 mph after slowing and speeding back up interested this 26" eye and a few other 16" - 20". Wrapped up by 7 PM.
Thanks again for the posts Ray, good to see a little walleye chatter about Vermilion area. I have been away from it 20 years and I am re-learning the art this year.

We had great luck with walleye in Feb. Mar. April May around the reef and islands. Perching is fun but anxious to troll for walleye again.
If I go out of Lorain, is the dumping grounds straight North and starting at around the 41 31 line and then go North?
Thanks again for your help Ray!Dave(snothere)

Yes you have the location correct. Here is a link to the NOAA map of the area from Vermilion eastward including the Lorain area > http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14826.shtml

Had a decent day fishing with our guests today Sunday.
Put 10 Walleys in the box including a nice FO that turned the scales at 8 lbs.
We ran the big boards and a couple of Dipsy's
40-45 FOW on the SE end of the Sandbar, 10 miles NE out of Vermilion.
Fish were around 35ft to 40ft down.
Ran most stuff in the tackle boxes.
Worm harnesses with 3oz inline weights 80 back caught some. Color did not matter!
#9 and #7 Flicker Minnows with 3oz inlines worked as did Bandits on the same numbers with the 3 oz inlines weight.
On the Dipsy's we pulled spoons, harness's and tried a Perfect 10 which was the only lure that did not produce.
We ran them on a #3 setting 80 or 90 back.
Best speed was between 2.0 & 2.5 mph. 1.5 to 1.8 never produced a bite.
Also caught quite a lot of White Bass all really good size so it was really a good day out on the Lake.
Will be back at them tomorrow (Labor Day) just the normal team of Sue and me!Roy Page
