Managed to get the perfection knot really small and close. Shortened it up to less than an inch by starting it holding the eye of the hook and making each loop progressively smaller, starting with a 1/2" loop. To get it into the split ring without tearing up the line, I split the ring with wire cutters, put the tip of a hook into the open ring, slid the loop up to the hook and walked it around. Trying to embed a photo, but I haven't done it before.

Now I just need my Cat-Dog spoon to go with it.

O.K. I took a photo of the Mason plastic crimps I use. $4.00 for 100 sleeves. I make up spoon harnesses out on the water if I need. I always have crimpers in the boat just cause ya never know when your going to need to fix some wiring. And a image of the bumble bee blades. I've never had a problem with the crimp breaking the mono.

    Default Crimp tool

Now we are getting somewhere. I found the mason crimps online and they are cheap and abundant. The size you have in the photo is "2C", the catalog says that's for 20lb test, is that what you are using because I was thinking you were a 17 lb test "guy"? Also, the crimp tool, do I really need the $30 tool that mason sells or can I use "any old crimp tool" I may already have? Thanks again for the help / conversation. I am going to try and go up next weekend so I am full speed ahead on trying to get this figured out. I have the hooks, painted spoons, and bought beads last night from hobby lobby so I should be all set soon. I am beginning to realize why a store bought lure is $3-$5!! Oh well, what else is there to do? Thanks guys

That is the size I use with my #17 test, if you go to .043" you can fit the line thru, but it's a tough go. I'm lazy and it works. Any crimps that don't cut into the mono when you crimp it works, one friend uses his needle nose vise grips.

Anyone know of any places in PC that sell the crimps? I know that Fisherman's Wharf carries Stinger spoons, but I'm cautiously optimistic my order will arrive before we head up tomorrow afternoon. Nobody down here carries them, I've checked Bass Pro, hardware stores, Sears, Dick's and none of them have crimps. I just need to know whether or not to have my old man bring some wiring pliers. I used the perfection knots and have the hooks within 3/4" of the split ring, but I'd feel more comfortable with crimps.

My question is why use crimp sleeves when making mono harnesses? I tie hundreds of harnesses a year and all the harnesses I tie on mono I simply tie a loop knot in it. I only use crimp sleeves when I'm tying harnesses on 30# wire.

When I tie regular harnesses I use a loop also, I use the crimps for the spoon harness so I can get the top hook as close as possible to the spoon. Did I miss something?

Default Putting of the first hook of a harness

I am beginning start building some harnesses...do I have to snell that first hook? Or can it be attached with a crimp or sleeve? Also is there an advantage over using wire or heavier mono?

    Thanks,

    Ben

You can use a crimp instead of snelling, you can use #30 coated cable if you prefer, the #30 coated cable I used was the same dia as the #17 mono. I got tired of the cable getting kinked after multiple fish so switched to the #17 mono.
I've gotten quite a few responses on running these, RUN THESE from .8mph to 1.4mph with .9 to 1.2 being the best. The guys doing that are having great results, the guys running them at 1.9 and above have not, if you want to run that fast leave the meat off. I run these along with regular harnesses and the walleye will let you know what they prefer.
