    Default rookie troller need advice

this is my 3d attempt to post - keep getting kicked out

went trolling for the first time yesterday (fri.) rough day on the lake 50 fow. i use a mini troll with a 5lb ball.
my issues were my ball would flare out from the back of the boat i running 1.6 mph assuming i'm not getting an accurate dept. my line would not release from rigger line. however, i did manage to boat a 27" 9lb walleye, i can't really take credit for it for it could have been on for sometime and getting it in was not pretty - reeling, cranking, netting all at the same time - it wasn't pretty.

    questions
    is my weight to light
am i not cinching down tight enough from rod to rigger line
is my release (gator medium) looping line to attach not correct.

    help

Yes too light of weight and too heavy of releases, my advise is go to a lighter release even a planer board release, amd use a 12# Torpedo Divers downrigger weight there is no blowback with these weights.

Blacks are very good releases...I used them for salmon fishing on LO for many years.

For walleye fishing on Erie I switched to Chamberlin releases (see link). They solve many problems we see with small or junk fish on riggers. You can crank way down your rigger rods for better hook sets, and at the same time have the release trigger on a light strike from very small fish. And like with the Blacks, they release on fish strike from all directions.
